A Juneteenth Community Making Experience
What we’re doing:
In honor of Juneteenth, Beads of Hope is a community-based jewelry-making experience hosted by NB Makes designed to educate all participants on the impact of trade beads in Black history and celebrate hope and freedom. This event is presented in partnership with the City of Dallas Office of Arts and Culture and in collaboration with Make Space, featuring activities from fellow Black makers Mosaic Maker’s Collective.
Why it matters:
Did you know that during the African slave trade, trade beads were used to barter for people? That means jewelry was actually used to oppress instead of bring joy, as it does today. A central part of NB Makes artwork is reflecting on this truth and taking opportunities to embed joy and intention into every jewelry event
What participants will do: During the event, participants will:
Create their own jewelry piece from handmade ceramic beads inspired by the African Diaspora
Photograph your piece and capture your intention
Experience the joy and freedom of creation within the Black community with local Black makers
All free to the public!
Why your donations matter:
While we’re honored to have the support of the City of Dallas Office of Arts and Culture and partnership with Make Space, this event will still require significant financial investment from my art practice to make possible.
In order to be able to provide this opportunity to the community free of charge, we are seeking support and donations from our community near and far.
Our goal is to raise $1,000. Any donation you’d consider providing would allow for us to provide refreshments for participants, support materials for the featured artists, expand our advertising efforts, and most importantly, keep the event free for everyone who attends.
As a thank you, we will gift (1) mug to one randomly selected supporter providing a donation of any quantity by June 5.
Thank you for you contributions and support!
